Mysteries along the road most traveled

Because we live near a reservoir, there is a lot of natural terrain that remains. Along with a few mysteries. So the other day, I took my camera with me down my street to show you what I wonder about, several times a day. Yea, I’m a little off-topic today, but just sit back and enjoy the mysterious drive down my street with me!

I’m a little off-topic this week, but as spring has finally sprung here in CT, I’ve been wondering about some beautiful yet mysterious sites along my street.

I don’t know about you, but I seem to drive around town alot, which means I drive down my street at least several times per day.

First, here’s the dogs-eye view of my street.  Very wooded and beautiful.

The first mystery I come across is a door built into the side of a hill. I have no idea what is in there!  Any thoughts?

Then a little further on, there are stairs that seem to lead to nowhere (actually, they lead up to the reservoir).  I can’t drive by without the theme from Rocky playing in my stairs to nowhere

Next up is a  huge boulder with a big split in it.  Now how did that happen?  Surely there is a good story behind this.

And finally, a very old family marker for which a perpendicular street was named after.  Is anyone buried there? Does the family still live in the area?

I think I need to visit our local library and ask some of these questions.

Do you have any mysteries on your street or in your town?  Guess these are great fodder for urban legends!

  1. Love it! I will spread word of this story as urban legend and see if it sticks. You’re very creative!

  2. I love a good mystery! Wouddn’t it be interesting to have a blog completely about mysteries like this? I’m like RML – I’m fascinated by what once was whenever I see a home or garden in a state of abandoment!

  3. My brain only gets creative on Fridays. The rest of the week it sits in a dark cave staring at spreadsheets 😉
But Susan, you live in a beautiful area.

  4. Yes, I think Struggler nailed it! A bit of a dark story, but intriguing! Pam, it may well be an old spring house…I’m going to stop by the library this weekend and see what I can find out.

Julia, I’m going to have to watch that movie again (like I need a good excuse lol).

  5. Well, I’m going to have to go with what struggler said…pretty nice! 🙂

  6. I think the door in the hill may be an old Spring house. Maybe before the reservoir? I just love this post. It is so much fun to learn about the history of an area.

  7. Wow, I can’t possibly top Struggler’s ideas, so I won’t even try! I’m not that creative tonight. 🙂

Really love that door in the hill. It reminds me of the one in “Chocolat.” The DVD special features talked about the French village that they filmed in, and there was a very old “doorway” that marks the boundary. No actual door left on it, though, as I recall–just a stone archway like this.

  9. Well, how about this:
Two giants, Rocky and Stony, were jealous rivals for the affections of a beautiful princess who lived at the top of those steps. One day, the giants decided that whoever could race up the steps fastest, would win the princess.
It was a fast and furious race, but Rocky won by a few seconds. In his anger, when Stony arrived at the top of the steps, he grabbed the princess and pushed her down, killing her. She is buried at the family marker.
Rocky’s grief was so intense that he pounded the nearest boulder and caused a huge split in it. The sound of the boulder splitting brought the villagers running from the nearby village. When they saw their beautiful princess dead with Rocky sobbing nearby, they rounded on Stony and captured him. Since none of the local jail cells were large enough, they built a special prison in the hillside, where he lived out his days alone.

Art on the Pier at P-Town

While on vacation at Cape Cod this summer, we visited P-Town (a.k.a. Provincetown) at the very top tip of the Cape. While we walked along the pier waiting for our whale watching boat, I was able to enjoyed three lovely yet very different pieces of art. Each inspirational in their own way.
