A Pretty Porch with a Purpose

black lab on the porchWe all love porches, right? But why…what do we actually use them for? Here are a few thoughts:

  • Drinking morning coffee or a twilight glass of {fill in the blank}
  • Socializing with friends and family, or, just talking on the phone
  • Quiet time: read, do crossword puzzles, Sudoku, etc.
  • Napping {sigh}
  • Bird watching
  • Playing board games
  • Grilling
  • Eating!
  • Doing nothing.

Don’t have a porch? No worries…whether or not you have a porch, you can still incorporate my porch-like features into your outdoor spaces. Just start with decide what activities you want to do there.

My favorite inspirational porch designs. Enjoy!

I love the cluster of potted plants, and check out that very cool clock!

Great use of space here – the rug ties together the conversational hub, and the swinging bench is beautiful.

  1. I love everything about this site. I have wicker colored siding and black shutters with a small amount of red brick on the bottom. I change the color of my front door nearly every year. The neighbors can’t wait to see what color I’ll pick next. The barn doors are fabulous! We also just put a new deck on the back with real wood and black spindles. I’m thinking black wicker with red ikat pillows! Had fun looking at everything!

  2. Thanks for the wonderful ideas, Susan! these are really some of the nicest porches I’ve seen, and I can’t wait to get started on my own. What’s a Southern home without a nice porch, right? lol…be back soon!

  3. Very inspiring, I am a visual person and find it tricky to explain my vision..pictures help so much, and yours are lovely!

  4. What a great blog post – porches. We just bought our home in Charlotte 4 years ago and a porch was a MUST. It’s just big enough for 2 rockers and a table to hold a plant and drinks.

    I’d love for you to stop by and tell me what you think about my new blog, Color Recipes. I focus on how food is the best inspiration for color schemes.

    Love your blog!
