How to Upcycle Buttons into Jewelry

We have a special guest blogger today – my niece Emily who is spending the summer with us! She is so creative, and we’re getting ourselves into trouble finding more projects than we have time for!

Who has an overabundance of buttons? I had a drawer-full and needed some way to use them. It turns out you don’t need to spend a penny to make a wearable necklace out of buttons. All you need is some inspiration and motivation!

The quickest way to gain inspiration for an upcycling buttons is Pinterest. There are several creative and innovative ideas pinned to their website on button jewelry alone. In fact, buttons as jewelry is a great idea. They’re cute, colorful, and have holes in them. It’s perfect.

When seeking inspiration, keep in mind what you have on hand to work with. In this case, all it took was some crochet string, buttons (of course), a crochet hook, and scissors.

For this necklace, I made a crochet chain and added a button every few stitches. Once the first strand was long enough, I decided to add some pizzazz by going back the other way and making a shorter strand. By the end I had a cute-as-a-button necklace that took well under an hour to make.

This simple button necklace cost nothing and only took about an hour to make.
