How to Score at a Barn Estate Sale

I had a blast an annual barn estate sale where 11 sellers display their items for sale. Not only did I score some awesome findings (for only $20), but I also enjoyed the bittersweet savings of leaving some amazing items behind for others to love {sigh}.

Here’s my rule: if I can’t currently use it, or have time to fix it up to sell for more, I take a photo of it and treasure the memory.

First, here’s what I found, for  TOTAL of $20. A couple antique tins, coca-cola mug, rooster piggy bank (to corral lose change), a vintage bakers tin from Holland, and a fortune teller game card for my daughter’s Halloween costume.

I saw many items that inspired countless upcycling project ideas. An awesome retro rotary dial wall phone, working barbershop pole sign, vintage luggage, and scores of silver-plated silverware that could make an awesome upcycled hook/rack.

And signs that would be fun additions to hallways, dressing rooms, or the home office.

Next time you go to an estate or tag sale, don’t forget to count the things you left behind in your total savings!

Fair Warning: if you think you’ll lose sleep over NOT getting something, trust your instincts!

It’s all about having more wins that losses. But to win, you have to get in the game and practice. Over time, you’ll hone your instincts. While I would have LOVED this vintage trike – I really don’t have a good place to park it.
