Organizing

A big “thanks” to Bahram from Dulles Glass and Mirrors for this post! I’m all for anyone with suggestions for making spring cleaning fun and interesting! Get out that Windex and look for ways to add sparkle to your home with these great tips that go beyond smoke and mirrors!

Spring is approaching, and with it comes the boring ritual that has become spring cleaning. This year, in addition to the mundane scrubbing, why not liven up some drab areas of your home with a little sleight-of-hand sparkle. Here are five tips using mirrors and glass that will add a touch of brightness to any room, without expensive remodeling. Guaranteed to be a lot more fun than using a mop!

1. Discover Mirrored Tile

When it comes to decorative mirrors, you can’t just throw the average mirror on a wall and call it a day – chances are it won’t be big enough to really make a difference in a dark room. Large designer mirrors are expensive and heavy, and usually require a professional to install.

This is where mirrored tile really shines, pardon the pun. Available in a wide variety of sizes and colors, mirrored tiles are reasonably priced and make a great DIY weekend project. The 12×12 or 18×18 are best for wall projects; the smaller mosaic sizes are great for backsplashes and similarly sized areas. Create a large rectangular shape over your sofa, or get creative with a 4′ by 4′ diamond shape. Transform that tiny dining room by mirroring an entire wall. Create a faux floor mirror complete with frame. Use your imagination – mirror tiles are extremely versatile!

The Makings of a Dream Garage

by Guest on January 30, 2012

in Organizing,Outdoor Spaces

So, have you decorated your garage yet? Ok, so maybe you haven’t looked at it this way, but I think we can all agree that it needs to organized! I love this post from Jessica – a self-professed DIY and blog junkie about creating your dream garage. If the garage is not your area of responsibility, feel free to forward this post to your personal garage manager.

A well organized garage is every homeowners dream; unfortunately the garage is one room in the home that doesn’t always receive the love it deserves. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t use my garage for random items that have no place, excess storage and well, garbage. Just because we don’t spend as much time in there as we do in the kitchen, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t still be a space that can be enjoyed.

One of the main reasons my garage gets neglected is because I never go in there. It houses the boyfriend’s project car and the many, many tools he “requires” to work on it and therefore looks like this most of the year:

Elfa Closet Envy

by Susan on January 6, 2012

in Bedrooms,Laundry/Halls/Foyers,Organizing

her closetI have a confession to make. I have closet envy. I shouldn’t – I actually scored my own walk-in closet in my current house. I even wrote “hers” above the door in case anyone needs clarification of ownership.

But what I have in space is tempered by efficiency. I have no closet system. Just the racks that came with the house, augmented by canvas shoe bags that sag like…{fill in the blank}.

So when my good friend of many years called me to come see her new Elfa Closet, I checked my jealously at the door and ran over to check it out. We all love a good closet story, right?

We’ve seen the promises of miracles on The Container Store website – the closets featured look so uncluttered and delightful. But what about elfa in the “real” world? I had to see it for myself, and of course, share it with you!

Before I show you the real deal, lets drool over some amazing Elfa closets from The Container Store website.

I miss my old laundry closet in my last house. It was 2nd floor, and it’s only purpose was providing clean clothes.

Now I have a laundry room off the kitchen, which forces certain mudroom functionality on a space overwhelmed by needs, especially since I no longer even have a mudroom. There is great temptation to overwork this little space.

Here’s how the room looked when we moved in.

It’s that time of year. Time to dig deep into your closet and find a fabulous dress to wear for your upcoming holiday parties!

And surely you’re organizing your closet while you’re in there, right? I just dove into my closet for a seasonal tune-up this week, and realized that I don’t have a fresh holiday dress. So I’m on the hunt for the perfect dress.

Shabby Apple dress sketchI just LOVE dresses. Just like my 6 year old daughter, I love the way they flow when I twirl and how I feel in them. You’re never too old to play dress up!

Sure, dresses are timelessly flirty, feminine and fun. But there is a practical side as well.

  1. There is nothing to coordinate
  2. You can easily change up the look with accessories

Improving Small Closet Functionality

Ok, this is going to be a relatively boring post. There are no flashy design ideas, splashy colors or totally room makeovers here. Even the title is boring. But if you’d like to see how you can make your small closet work harder for you for just $36, read on. First of all, here is [...]

What To Wear!

Every day I go in my closet to get dressed, and ask myself that question. But I don’t always get an easy answer.  Now if I’m only wearing 20% of my wardrobe (the norm), then I’m wasting a lot of time looking at the other 80% in pursuit of what to wear! What a waste [...]

My Laundry Closet Needs a Makeover

My laundry room is just an upstairs closet off the main hall.   But it’s also the only “room” in my home that I haven’t at least painted! I actually started this project over a year ago by adding “Laundry Room Flair” with cute knobs, writing on the wall and a fun switch plate cover. But [...]

Hooking Up Kids Rooms For School

It’s back to school season! To help things along, I tweaked my kids carefree summer rooms a bit in hopes of helping them get ready faster in the mornings and to inspire them to do homework. Ok, so maybe I’ll settle for just getting them out the door with no tears. Here are a few inexpensive tweaks I made…

The Linen Closet Challenge

As we think about hunkering down for impending fall, we experience a natural urge to organize. Call it “nesting” if you like. I find this organic urge more strongly in the fall than the spring. Maybe it’s because we get extreme seasons here in CT (and I tend to be a bit dramatic about the weather). This time, I’m going to use labels, hoping it will help maintain this newfound organization!
