Bedrooms

Do you have a wall you just don’t know what to do with? Large and/or odd shaped walls sections can be challenging to decorate.

Rather than search high and low for a piece of art to fit your exact space, why not create a unique collection of items with a custom arrangement of smaller pieces perfect for your awkward space? You’ll have much more flexibility with scale.

Because the pieces are smaller, you can fit them to what you need. You can go repetitive for a more contemporary feel, or create a vignette much like a flower designer would. It’s a great way to incorporate your own personality into your display.

I was inspired when I visited the Global Views showroom at the Las Vegas Winter Market. Yes, they have many beautiful things, but what stood out to me was how they arranged unique pieces on walls.

First, I want to show you how you can use repetitive sculptures on your wall.  Great way to add a bit of whimsy, and create a great conversation piece!

Or, if these guys creep you out, how about some bowls, plates or mirrors artfully displayed?

Or, how about some flower power for color and splash?

If you want to get a bit more crazy, how about animal noses? I saw these at the Cyan showroom (but not sure where you can order them). Just find a nose you like and spray paint them any color you would like.

If you’re interested in learning more about these pieces (except for the animal noses), you can see wall art and sculptures at Global View’s website. But to purchase for yourself, you’ll need to find a retailer in your area. You can also follow them on Pinterest – many interesting items!

So if finding the right wall art has you climbing the walls, think outside the box and create a wall as unique as you are!

While I visited many showrooms at the Las Vegas Market, I would have to say the GuildMaster showroom was one of my favorite because it has so many unique painted pieces.  There is something for everyone – muted tones to bold colors, and unique reclaimed items you can use to embellish furniture pieces. So creative!

At the end of this post, I’ll show you where you can buy them, or – if these ideas stir your DIY instincts, I’ll share some “how to” tips with you!

First, let’s look at the neutral hued pieces.

Elfa Closet Envy

by Susan on January 6, 2012

in Bedrooms,Laundry/Halls/Foyers,Organizing

her closetI have a confession to make. I have closet envy. I shouldn’t – I actually scored my own walk-in closet in my current house. I even wrote “hers” above the door in case anyone needs clarification of ownership.

But what I have in space is tempered by efficiency. I have no closet system. Just the racks that came with the house, augmented by canvas shoe bags that sag like…{fill in the blank}.

So when my good friend of many years called me to come see her new Elfa Closet, I checked my jealously at the door and ran over to check it out. We all love a good closet story, right?

We’ve seen the promises of miracles on The Container Store website – the closets featured look so uncluttered and delightful. But what about elfa in the “real” world? I had to see it for myself, and of course, share it with you!

Before I show you the real deal, lets drool over some amazing Elfa closets from The Container Store website.

My daughter turns 11 today! December birthday’s can be tough, especially now that she’s a tween (or is that pre-teen?). It’s a challenge to separate birthday from Christmas, as documented a couple years ago in the “How to make a December Birthday Special” post. But she’s older now, and I really need to step up my mom-game.

I wanted to surprise her, so I’m tweaking her room while she’s at school. Yes, we recently designed her room when we moved earlier this year, as document in the “A Blue Tween Room for Girls.” Remember this room? –>

Because she loves art and has a passion (understatement) for horses, we found her a lovely horse painting from HomeGoods as inspiration.

It’s that time of year. Time to dig deep into your closet and find a fabulous dress to wear for your upcoming holiday parties!

And surely you’re organizing your closet while you’re in there, right? I just dove into my closet for a seasonal tune-up this week, and realized that I don’t have a fresh holiday dress. So I’m on the hunt for the perfect dress.

Shabby Apple dress sketchI just LOVE dresses. Just like my 6 year old daughter, I love the way they flow when I twirl and how I feel in them. You’re never too old to play dress up!

Sure, dresses are timelessly flirty, feminine and fun. But there is a practical side as well.

  1. There is nothing to coordinate
  2. You can easily change up the look with accessories

Improving Small Closet Functionality

Ok, this is going to be a relatively boring post. There are no flashy design ideas, splashy colors or totally room makeovers here. Even the title is boring. But if you’d like to see how you can make your small closet work harder for you for just $36, read on. First of all, here is [...]

A Blue Tween Room for Girls

Got a tween girl in the house? Then you know how hard it is to please her. “Too old for toys, and too young for boys.” If you want her to take (some) responsibility for keeping her room manageable, you’ve got to include her in the design process.  My daughter’s latest room (yes, there have been many [...]

A Welcoming Guest Room that Works

We’ve been renovating our you-know-what’s off for almost four months now. But we couldn’t rest until the guest room was ready for my Mother-in-Law (who is coming in two weeks!). Her sister is joining her, so we’ll have twice the fun! Here’s what we had to work with…the room was pink with brown carpeting, and [...]

Purple Bedroom to Ooh La La on a Budget

My five year old articulated it well when she first saw her new room. “It looks like Barney threw up in here.” The walls and doors were dark purple, and all the trim was dark pink. Seeing how we would be the ones painting it, I thought I would throw up too. That’s a big [...]

Master Bedroom Move-In Makeover

The master suite is supposed to be a retreat to sooth the soul at the end of a long day. But we just weren’t feeling it from this house when we first viewed it online. It felt dark, dated, and yes, it looked like a lot of work! The reddish-brown carpet and pink walls almost sent us [...]
