In the spirit of efficiency, I’d like to shamelessly highlight some of my favorite holiday posts from last year – both here at yourhomeonlybetter.com and at the HomeGoods Openhouse blog.
While it may appear that I’m being lazy, put I actually discovered that when I switched blogging platforms early this year I lost many images from [...]

Howdy…just wanted to share a slice of American Pie with you. We enjoyed are small town Memorial Day parade this morning. It’s a chance for local kids to march and for everyone to pay tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom – for us and our children. Thank you.
Freedom rocks…thank you!

It’s almost time for that annual event (May 10th, if you need to know).
Forget the flowers, buffet lunches and chocolates (ok, maybe keep the chocolates). Let’s get real. Here are the top 10 gifts us mom’s could really use, but probably won’t come right out and ask for:

We’re hosting a small, casual Easter dinner party at our house this year. Because we’re serving barbecued ribs from the grill instead of traditional ham, I wanted to alter the party décor to match the casual tone. We’re going to use terracotta pots for tealights and as nameplates/goodie bags…

Monday is Groundhog Day. If you believe in the little guy, we could see up to 6 more weeks of winter. Although here in New England we’re looking at more like 2 months whether he sees his shadow or not.
Anyway, it got me thinking about seasonal décor. Yes, we did the whole holiday decorating thing in [...]

I love Danish pancakes! Essentially, they are large, thin pancakes (think crepe) that are filled with jam and sugar and rolled up. It’s been a holiday tradition for my family since I can remember. My dad had to translate the recipe from his dad (since it was written in rather loose terms). But the recipe has [...]

While the Chinese Christmas duck image from “A Christmas Story” may be stuck in your head, duck and other alternative menus can make a holiday celebration very special. (Note: video clip at the end of this post – hilarious scene).
Now I’m the first to admit that I’m not a great cook, but I’m not afraid to [...]

I don’t live near my family, so we mail our gifts to each other. This year, I got a huge surprise when opening the box from my parents. The cling-on Nisse characters I played with at Christmas time as a little girl. I’m half Danish – my Dad’s parents were immigrants from Denmark.
Growing up we [...]

It’s not everyday in Connecticut that you see an animated, illuminated flamingo grazing alongside a couple traditional reindeer lawn ornaments.
“Bingo” (the name my kids gave to the flamingo) was an early Christmas present to my husband from my sister (who drew his name this year). Here’s the fun part…he drew her name [...]

“Happy Thanksgiving!” will be joyously uttered next week as friends and family get together to share a feast of thanks. The word “Thanks” is a very powerful word, and there are many wonderful quotes to help give it more shades of color. Here are some I will be adding to the bottom of my dinner [...]

I recently posted a shortened version of my recent post Hosting a Dinner Party Without the Stress on the HomeGoods Openhouse blog. Click here for the Openhouse version.
Then I just got my Dream Dinner’s email newsletter, and wished I had added their holiday menu to the Openhouse post. I served their menu last year, [...]

While I enjoy my copper pumpkins on my mantle this time of year, it’s the nighttime that makes them truly spooktacular (sorry, couldn’t resist). Think about it…with the days getting shorter, you see your mantel at night more often than in the light.
So when you make your seasonal mantle display, make sure it works [...]

It’s September in Connecticut, and I’m confused as can be about whether to wear a parka or a tank top. It’s 50-60 degrees when I wake up, but makes it up to 70 or so by mid-day. The kids are confused too as our closets are packed with two-season’s worth of clothes.
Why do I mention [...]
